Harvesting time: from January to March
The Red Tarocco orange is the finest variety of red flesh- oranges. It is blood red, it has no seeds and a sweet taste, due to the high ratio between brix degrees and acidity content.
Red Tarocco is a powerful natural antioxidant, it is rich in Vitamin C and has a high quantity of anthocyanins.
This variety contains 40% more vitamin C than other citrus fruits and has a high content of lycopene and anthocyanins (two phyto-compounds with antioxidant action), which give the orange its unique red colour.
Moreover, this citrus fruit contains twice the amount of anthocyanins than other oranges. With its soft, finely pored and bright red peel, it is a very resistant and versatile variety.
It is an excellent orange to eat, to squeeze and more. Very versatile, it is perfect for countless recipes.
It is grown mainly in the Catania plain, where the temperature ranges between day and night; moreover, the presence of Mount Etna promote the pigmentation.
Harvesting time: from December to April
Tarocco Gallo is one of the most popular Sicilian oranges in Italy and abroad, thanks to its strawberry aroma, its red flesh, its low acidity content and its properties.
The skin is thin and smooth, of medium or thin thickness; it is orange-yellow and reddened on more than half of the surface.
Tarocco Gallo is free of seeds and transport-resistant. It mainly grows in the province of Catania, where the temperature, thanks to the snow of Mount Etna, drops greatly. Because of that, this variety has a strong pigmentation, which mainly depends on the citrus’ degree of ripeness.
It is red- pigmented from the end of December to January.
Harvesting time: from the end of February to April
The Lempso belongs to the family of red oranges and late-ripening red oranges.
The fruit is medium in size and spheroidal in shape, the skin is 90% deep red, making this variety unique from an aesthetic point of view.
Unlike the skin, the flesh is ruby with less intense red pigmentation than a Red Tarocco. It is a very resistant variety, even for the purposes of shelf life.
This citrus fruit is classified as late-ripening red orange and should not be harvested before the end of February to ensure its fresh, sublime taste.
At the beginning of January, the Tarocco Lempso is intense red externally but has not yet matured internally.
Harvesting time: from April to June
The Tarocco Meli is an oval citrus fruit of Italian origin; the skin is finely pored, thin and seedless with a high juice content.
The flesh’s colour is mainly orange, but during maturation’s period it becomes bright red, the classic colour, which makes this variety popular all over the world.
Like all Tarocco oranges, the Meli variety contains citric acid, vitamins (especially C, but also A, B1, B2 and PP) and mineral salts. It is also rich in flavonoids and polyphenols molecules with antioxidant action.
It ripens late thanks to the high persistence of the ripe fruit on the plant.
Harvesting time: from the end of February to May
The Sanguinello variety belongs to the PGI Red Orange of Sicily’s family, one of the most famous and beloved typical products of our region.
It has a globular shape, medium size, an orange skin with red hues and an orange flesh with red streaks.
It generally contains few seeds and is very juicy.
Sanguinello oranges have a dual vocation and are therefore excellent both if they are eaten or used to make juices.

Nova is a cross between Tangelo Orlando and the common Clementine, produced in Florida in 1942.
Medium-large in size, Nova oranges are seedless and have an intense orange outer colour.
As perfumed as mandarins, they have a very thin skin that perfectly adheres to the fruit. Its pulp has a high content of juice, which gives the fruit a very special flavour, with a pleasant balance between acidity and sugar.
The soft and fertile soil of Etna and its mild climate make the Sicilian Clementines of a superior quality.
Harvesting time: from November to May/June
Navel orange is the generic name given to the varieties of citrus sinensis that hide within the fruit another small orange, poorly developed, located at the opposite pole to the petiole.
Of South American origin, the first umbilicated orange would be "born" in a Brazilian monastery starting from a single mutation that produced the new twin orange (with much less space to grow, however). This is why on the outside, the Navel orange varieties show on their skin a sort of little depression that look like a navel.
Among the navel varieties, we can find early-ripening Newhall Navel, the Washington Navel, very popular and appreciated for its low acidity and the Lane Late variety, that is harvested until May/June.
Navel has several beneficial properties: it rich in vitamin C, but it also has vitamin A, B1, B2, mineral salts and sugars. With its recognised antioxidant, detoxifying, diuretic and digestive qualities, Navel is an excellent ally for our health.
